Choosing the Right Benchtop Finish

When it comes to kitchen design, I always say: the details are the design. And if your kitchen benchtop is the hero (which, let’s be honest, it usually is), then the finish you choose is what gives it character. Natural stone has been loved for centuries—and for good reason. It’s strong, timeless, and grounding (literally). But most people don’t realise how much the finish of a stone benchtop can change how it looks, feels, and functions in your space.

So let’s zoom in on the three main finishes people usually ask me about—polished, honed, and leathered—and what each one can do for your home and your lifestyle.

Polished – The Shiny Showstopper

This is the finish most of us picture when we think of marble or granite. Smooth as silk and reflective like a mirror, a polished benchtop brings light, luxury, and a little bit of drama into your kitchen. It’s great at bouncing light around the space, which is especially handy in smaller kitchens or darker corners. Plus, it’s a breeze to wipe down—ideal for anyone who wants their after-dinner clean-up to be fast and fuss-free.

That said, the super glossy surface can sometimes mask the natural charm of the stone itself. You might find that, under all that shine, the subtleties of the veining and texture feel a little flattened. It’s also the kind of finish that tends to attract smudges and fingerprints, so if your kitchen doubles as a family hub (or if you’re a bit of a clean freak), just keep that in mind. Still, if you’re chasing that show-home shimmer and love the look of gloss, polished is a classic for a reason.

Honed – The Soft All-Rounder

If polished is the shiny star of the show, honed is its softer, quieter cousin. With a matte or satin feel, a honed benchtop gives off a beautifully understated look that suits both modern and traditional spaces. It allows the natural beauty of the stone to come through without the glare—so you can appreciate the veining, tone, and movement in a more subtle way.

It’s also a finish that wears well in real life. Scratches tend to blend in rather than stand out, making it a practical choice for kitchens that actually get used (hello, weeknight cooking chaos). The only thing to note is that honed finishes are a bit more porous than polished ones, which means sealing is important—especially if red wine or beetroot are part of your culinary adventures. But all in all, it’s a fantastic all-rounder for those who love natural textures and gentle sophistication.

Leathered – The Textured Individualist

Now we’re getting into more tactile territory. A leathered finish, sometimes called brushed or antiqued, has a gently textured surface that brings out the character of the stone in a beautifully nuanced way. It’s especially stunning on darker stones, where the finish enhances the depth and richness of the material. And when you run your hand across it, there’s a subtle softness—almost like stone that’s been worn smooth by nature.

The texture also has a practical upside: it’s great at disguising fingerprints, crumbs, and the odd splash of olive oil. On the flip side, cleaning might take an extra moment since it’s not completely flat, and it’s not for everyone—some people prefer the feel of a smooth surface, and that’s perfectly fine. But if you’re after a finish with soul, one that feels a little lived-in and lovingly tactile, leathered might just win your heart.

Find Your Finish Fit

Choosing a natural stone benchtop isn’t just about picking a slab and calling it a day. The finish you choose tells people what kind of home you want to live in—and what kind of host you want to be. Some finishes catch the eye and light up a room. Others quietly elevate the everyday. And some invite your hands to linger just a little longer - that said, my hands usually touch ALL natural stones, cause, how can you not... There’s no right or wrong here—just what feels right for you and how you live.

And remember, the best kitchens aren’t always the trendiest ones. They’re the ones that feel good, work hard, and age gracefully. That starts with thoughtful choices—and finishes—that supports the way we use our spaces. If you’re still unsure, or want to see and feel the difference in person, you know where to find me.

With love (and a clean sponge always nearby),
Nadia
